Many believe that developing one’s intuition – or getting information from a professional psychic – will ensure that they will “know” whatever they need to know, when they need to know it. There is a false sense of “all will be well once I know the answer” kind of security. This is not only unrealistic; it is a set up for disappointment and can distract you from the deeper gifts available from intuitive insights.
Our intuitive senses are… well, senses. And, given that they are metaphysical (denoting “beyond” or “behind”), they are a bit less tangible than our physical senses – though one may experience physical sensations through psychic awareness. Although it may be mind-bogglingly awesome to have some “spot on” intuitive insights, it’s important to understand that intuitive senses are prone to the same misperceptions as our other senses. When undeveloped, intuitive discernment is tricky to say the least. Yet even as the professional hones in on mastered psychic skills, the information offered may not be accurate all of the time. Why is that?
First, notice how often your own senses mislead you…. I swear I heard someone knocking!... I’m sure I saw the light was green!... It didn’t taste spoiled when I ate it!
When filtering extra-sensory perceptive information many things may be happening at once; sounds, words, feelings, body sensations, images, colors, and complete “knowings” can bombard the intuitive, whether novice or professional. Receiving and delivering intuitive information is a multi-dimensional form of communication. It takes practice detecting, interpreting and finally translating such ethereal perceptions. Even the best communicator can sometimes misunderstand what’s being conveyed and respond inadequately.
Another reason intuitive insights can be “inaccurate” is that we are complex human beings with an array of beliefs, feelings, fears, and tendencies. Let’s say you are trying to psychically “peg” another person so you can “know” his or her romantic intentions toward you. A psychic read can tap into another person’s deep-seated fear such as “I don’t trust anyone because I was abandoned” and detect a closed heart. It can pick up on the person’s behavioral tendency; “I love the sexual charge of new attractions.” And, of course, it can read the person from a higher soul level; “I wish to transcend my relationship issues and open to real love.” All of these perceptions may be concurrently true, yet from which aspect the person chooses to act will impact the outcome.
When it comes to psychic predictions and insights, here is a good analogy: If you are driving up a U.S. highway heading toward Canada, you could stop at a gas station and ask, “Am I going to get to Canada?” The local, who might know the route like the back of his hand, could reply, “Absolutely.” Essentially, the local is basing his answer on your intention to get to Canada as well as the highway and direction you are travelling. Noticing that you are travelling by car, not bike, he may also be able to predict how long it will take you to get there. The response is only as good as the considerations at that instance. The local has no control as to whether you decide to turn around and go to Mexico, or if you change course or vehicle and take the long, scenic route to Canada.
Whether they are your own intuitive insights, or those offered by a professional psychic, it is absolutely possible to make fascinating and accurate predictions! Although this can be extremely exciting, and even feel promising, psychic “knowings” don’t mean you will be forever joyful. True joy is not based on having certainties in life.
Sometimes the initial attraction to obtaining psychic information is the sense of security that it might offer, and many of us equate security with happiness. Yet security is an illusion. Sure, we all long for “enough” money, a forever love relationship, a solid roof over our head, and optimal health. As much as these things can make us feel good, they don’t guarantee authentic joy nor are they promised to us indefinitely. Life happens. People get sick, jobs change, lovers leave, roofs leak. Since change is the only constant, we must find ways to unlock joy within us, amidst perpetual change.
You already have extra-sensory perceptions. Whether your own or from a professional, relevant psychic insights generally validate that which you already know on a deeper level. If you choose to further develop your own abilities you – like the professional – will still be perfectly, beautifully human. As with money, relationships and good health, being psychic – acknowledging what your metaphysical senses are telling you – can certainly be pleasurable. A deepening of your senses, psychic awareness expands your capacity to experience the multi-faceted richness of life and can open you up to new aspects of your amazing being.
As much as visualization, meditation, Reiki and other similar modalities are coming into mainstream awareness, they are still dancing along the fringes of society trying to get noticed for their worth. And, as they do, our personal impulses may be dancing right alongside them wondering if we are being led astray. Not just because we are beginning to notice our own “woo-woo” tendencies and worried what that might mean, but moving to the fringe – though it may seem wild and free – can also feel uncomfortably edgy.
Accepting others as gifted, or experimenting with guided imagery or holistic health care in the privacy of our own home or Naturopath’s office is one thing, but publicly dancing along the outskirts may be more than we wish to exhibit. Yet, the pull to see what lies beyond the boundaries can be undeniably alluring. Perhaps the fabric of our lives has started to wear thin and we are seeking ways to create it anew. Many turn to alternative support when convention ceases to have adequate answers.
Whether we discover unconventional methodologies out of desperation, curiosity or our desire for growth, it often stirs in us our own supernatural abilities.
As the collective consciousness awakens, individuals awaken as well, and part of our evolution includes an awareness of our metaphysical capacities… and we all have them! For some this can be exciting, and for others a bit intimidating. Although we may not necessarily want to become the next Medium or spook ourselves too much by inviting in unwanted Paranormal Activity, it may seem as if our Sixth Sense is evolving, whether we want it to or not.
Since our intuitive nature is still a mystery to us as a culture, our media plays on that uncertainty. It has mastered how to make millions off our fears, ignorance and addiction to drama. As well, when our full capacities are utilized, we become more conscious of our choices, which empowers us. At this point in our societal timeline, empowered people haven’t always been met with open arms. They rock the boat, change things that are “just fine” and lead people into uncharted territories… yeah, that edge! And, fortunately, each time one person empowers many, the framework in which a society comfortably lives expands.
In terms of metaphysics, we are broadening our peripheral vision, seeing more clearly – which is what clairvoyance actually means – and becoming acutely aware of realities beyond our physical senses.
Although the mystical is becoming more accessible, your personal interest is probably piqued by your own “inner woo-woo” desiring to come out! Whether for your own personal empowerment, or to expand your gifts to serve many, it’s probably no accident you are reading this article. Hmmm… serendipity, karma, an angelic message? Call it whatever you want, but keep reading if you’re ready to unfold to your potential!
So how, exactly, does one discover, cultivate and embrace the “inner woo-woo”… and maybe even let it out to play amongst the fringe?
Learn more about your gifts.
It is important to note that our metaphysical gifts are so natural to us, and as they have been disregarded since childhood, they can be hard to discern. Yet, you can discover them in many ways. Seek insights from an intuitive. Invite your friends to share their thoughts and observations. Make a list of things that come easy to you. Pay attention to the physical sense you rely on most (it is likely your most refined metaphysical sense). Look behind your shortcomings to the opposite side of the coin. Ask Divine guidance to show you your inherent gifts. Seek and ye shall find!
Like you would with any new interest, have fun with your discovery process. Think of it as a treasure hunt. Put on your coolest explorer’s costume and let your “inner woo-woo” be your enthusiastic compass! The more you stress about what you have or don’t have – or question the value of what you will find – the deeper your treasures will be buried. As the treasures are yours, no one else can retrieve them for you, but you can certainly invite them to help you excavate.
Sharpen your skills.
Even if you haven’t discovered “your thing,” you can sharpen any skill of your choice. Take classes or read books that interest you. From Astrology to Zen Meditation, you can explore an array of written material and can often find local or online classes. You may be surprised to learn that Adult Ed isn’t just about watercolor or web design anymore! Your intention and pursuit will serve you.
Seek supportive environments.
Oftentimes when we are apprehensive about trying something new, we share it with those who will criticize it – don’t! Not only do you want to avoid having people burst your auric-bubble, you want to seek out others who will actually support your endeavors. Whether you fill your Facebook wall with like-minded friends, MeetUp with an ongoing group in your area, or instigate a gathering of your own, creating a supportive network can help ease the feelings of being too far off the beaten path. (By the way, the reception out there isn’t so great, so it’s best if you leave behind that restraining television.)
Play some more.
As your skills develop (or even if they don’t seem to) try to keep it light and joyful. If you get discouraged, accessorize your latest costume with some rosy-colored glasses. If you start to feel confined to one amusement, mix it up! As well, maybe you invite others to play along. Unless you’re worried about missing the next gypsy caravan, there’s really nothing to fret.
Whether you get intuitive hits, are a natural healer, talk to animals, or are great at manifesting, allow yourself to acknowledge and integrate your gifts. Bless your strengths and welcome the opportunities your weaknesses offer you. Write affirmative statements about your capabilities. Tell others you trust about what you can do and what you still wish to incorporate. Practice, practice, practice!
Share your gifts with others.
Once you establish a talent to a point just past beginner, allow yourself to share and practice with others. Invite folks to an evening of energy healing. Offer free aura readings. Divulge your secrets of manifesting with your book group. Share your insights and wisdom about your topic on YouTube (you can even set your upload to “unlisted”). Whatever your gifts are, sharing them may feel vulnerable, but it will be incredibly freeing. Your “inner woo-woo” will be happy to be out!
In time, all of this worry about being too “out there” will dissolve along with everyone else’s mainstream fabric. Our collective awakening is happening because we are ready. The veils are thinning and our mystical senses are sensing it – some are simply tuning in sooner than others are.
Before long, you’ll forget this was ever an issue. If a tinge of self-doubt creeps in, you’ll simply burn some sage to release any residual energies, maybe chant a quick mantra, and go back to your Feng Shui’ed office to write your next chapter in your book about how to open portals into the next dimension so you can transform into your true mythical self – the unicorn you so lovingly named Woo-Woo.
Right now you are likely feeling completely split over just about every decision in your life. Do I do THIS or THAT? You listen, ponder, analyze and even wait for a sign from the Universe. Yet, the “answer” is far from clear and confusion reigns with an iron fist!
As we move closer to Oneness, we find ourselves more confused than ever as we try to find the “right” way to live our lives. We want to make more conscious choices, listen more carefully to Source, and help, in some way, contribute our gifts and/or services to the betterment of Life. A beautiful offering; so, why are we utterly confused about how to do this?
Upon agreeing to awaken, we successfully passed the threshold of making more conscious choices. And, generally speaking, this has been a reward in and of itself. Thankfully, most of us feel we have been Divinely guided along the way. Sometimes it was our intuition, other times we prayed for the answers, or maybe a friend or two helped in our decision making processes. Likely, we used a combination of methods to be really clear about what to do next.
These days, however, Life seems to be a bit more foggy. Decisions seem to be demanding our attention and many of them are pretty big ones at that! Our intuition is on summer vacation, praying has turned into begging for an answer to knock us over the head, and our faithful friends are just as baffled as we are and offer conflicting advice! For some unsettling reason, we seem to have lost our “guides” and feel we are all alone as we try to make these conscious and important choices.
Did I mention the importance of breathing? As you feel the anxiety around all of this, just take a nice, deep breath – and even another one, right here, right now – before reading on. (Ah, that’s better.)
Well, the good news is, we are not alone! We still have Divine guidance; and as we awaken to our own Divinity, we are being asked to “fine tune” our inner listening skills and strengthen our trust in ourselves. And, it is helpful to note, as we release duality “either-or” decisions become much harder to make! Increasing trust in ourselves includes realizing the perfection of any choice we make and releasing the beliefs around “right” or “wrong” decisions. Although we may understand this on a deeper level, we always want to do what is “right” anyway!
As the pendulum swings from the Divine Masculine realm of analysis, logic and linear thinking toward the Divine Feminine realm of intuition, knowing and feeling, our souls are urging us to expand these inborn gifts in ourselves. We do not have to abandon our tried and true left-brain activities; we do have to nurture the right-brain ones, however, if we want to create more balance in our lives and have an easier time with those looming decisions. There are a number of ways to cultivate our intuition, creativity and emotional energies including (but not limited to) free-form journaling, dance, music and art; as well as more structured formats such as intuitive skills classes, learning through books, heart-centered group gatherings and numerous healing therapies.
Trusting ourselves can be a life long pursuit; it can also be highly developed to allow more ease in our lives. One way to develop any skill is through practice; the more you practice, the faster you develop the skill. And, it can be very helpful to have a teacher along the way. Teachers come in all forms: ministers, therapists, parents, friends, spiritual counselors, and life coaches to name a few. They can also appear as self-help books or other inspirational sources. Allowing someone to support us can be an empowering step toward self trust.
During this time of rapid expansion, when decisions can often overwhelm us, it is important to be gentle with ourselves. Here are some simple guidelines to assist us:
